Miss Earth Maryland 2015 Attends Sierra Club's Roanoke Group Earth Friendly Friday

Gree(n)tings everyone!!!

I hope you and yours are doing well. I've been very busy but happy, thanks to the Almighty! Yesterday I attended Earth Friendly Friday, organized by Sierra Club's Roanoke Group of the Virginia Chapter in Roanoke. The theme of this program was "YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK: The human & natural history of paradise." The program speaker was Mr. Bob Egbert. Bob shared his story and love for parks, and adventurous moments and encounters with the wildlife at Yellowstone. Did you know that, Yellowstone is the most complete natural ecosystem in the lower 48 states?

The monthly program series, "Earth Friendly Friday," presents topics of interest for environmentalists and those who enjoy and appreciate the natural world. It is the second Friday of each month, and it is jointly sponsored by the Roanoke Sierra Club and The Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke. Over the past weeks, I've communicated via e-mail with Mr. Daniel Crawford, Group Chair of the Roanoke Sierra Club; I got the opportunity to meet him and some of the members of the Group at the program last night. Mr. Crawford is also the Program Director for Earth Friendly Friday, Delegate to Virginia Chapter Executive Committee, and part of the Climate Watch Committee. Founded by conservationist John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club is now the nation's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization. Their work ranges from protecting millions of acres of wilderness to helping pass the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act.

Bob Egbert worked in Yellowstone for four summers 1974 to 1977: Two for Hamilton Stores at Yellowstone Lake and two for the National Park Service at Mammoth. He met his wife Sue at a park employee dance at Canyon Village in 1976. His daughter Lara worked in Yellowstone in '08 and in two other National Parks after that. He and his family have been back as a tourists four times, and intend to return as often as they can. Bob has been a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church since 1990 and is the coordinator for the church Green Team. He has been a Sierra Club member & volunteer since 1996. He is also a member of the Mid-Week Trail Crew. He worked as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist for 29 years and is now retired.

Fact: Yellowstone National Park is a national park located primarily in the. state of Wyoming, although it also extends into Montana and Idaho. It was established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872. Yellowstone, widely held to be the first national park in the world, is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser, one of the most popular features in the park. It has many types of ecosystems, but the subalpine forest is most abundant. It is part of the South Central Rockies forests ecoregion. Yellowstone Park is the largest and most famous megafauna location in the Continental United States. Grizzly bears, wolves, and free-ranging herds of bison and elk live in the park. The Yellowstone Park bison herd is the oldest and largest public bison herd in the United States. Hundreds of species of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles have been documented, including several that are either endangered or threatened. The vast forests and grasslands in Yellowstone also include unique species of plants.Yellowstone has numerous recreational opportunities, including hiking, camping, boating, fishing and sightseeing.

I am happy I attended this program because there's so much I got to learn from Bob and his experience at the Yellowstone National Park. I was very intrigued by the information and pictures he shared with all of us; I was taking notes like I had to take a test afterwards. Topics included: difference between national parks, national forests, and wilderness; chemical and mineral composition of certain parts of the Park; difference between grizzly bears and black bears; habits of wolves, and how they are different from coyotes; difference between antlers and horns; funny stories about the cougars at the Park; and many more!

Fun (Geology) Fact: Yellowstone Lake is one of the largest high-altitude lakes in North America and is centered over the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest supervolcano on the continent. The caldera is considered an active volcano. It has erupted with tremendous force several times in the last two million years. Half of the world's geothermal features are in Yellowstone, fueled by this ongoing volcanism. Lava flows and rocks from volcanic eruptions cover most of the land area of Yellowstone.
